Dr. Schmidt earned a B.A. from Macalester College (Phi Beta Kappa) in St. Paul, Minnesota, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

Background
Dr. Schmidt teaches in the areas of interpersonal, intercultural, and organizational communication. She has presented papers at converences throughout the U.S. and internationally in Moscow and St. Petersburg (Russia), Stockholm (Sweden), and Wellington (New Zealand) and has published in several academic journals and books. She received JCU’s Distinguished Faculty award which recognizes excellence in research, teaching, and advising.
She has also consulted with various business and professional organizations, among them: British Petroleum, the Cleveland Public Health Department, the Cuyahoga Bar Association, Invacare, and Reliance Electric. She uses these experiences to enhance her courses through case studies drawn from organizational settings, speakers, and experential exercises. For example, she is currently researching international differences/similarities in friendship, conflict, and creativity and her classes have been involved in email exchanges with students from South Korea, Russia, and Croatia on these issues.

Dr. Schmidt is the adviser to Eta Eta, the JCU chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honorary society.
