John Carroll and the Boler College are committed to equipping students with skills to compete for the most promising postings and promotions in today’s job market. JCU’s Analytics Edge programming prepares students with data skills to be successful in jobs ranging from auditing and financial analysis to new business development.  The curriculum is hands-on in Boler and our faculty are developing teaching methods and materials that help deliver the Analytics Edge.  Accountancy professor Mariah Webinger, along with coauthors Madeline Domino, of the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manate, Daniel Schrag of Baldwin Wallace University, and Carmelita Troy of Andrews University authored a case study to develop students’ analytical competencies.  The case faces students with a large complex data set that they would face in a real-world setting.  It helps students hone existing Excel skills and learn new methods to provide data-driven recommendations to a health care products manufacturer.  The authors found that students appreciated the practical nature of the lesson and significantly increased their awareness of the power of spreadsheets to address real-world business questions.
