Assistant Professor Arthur Petzel wins the 2020 Wasmer Outstanding Teaching Award

Assistant Professor Arthur Petzel

Assistant Professor of Accounting, Dr. Arthur Petzel, III, is named this year’s winner of the Wasmer Outstanding Teaching Award. The award recognizes excellence in teaching and is awarded annually to a member of the faculty of the Boler College of Business.

Established in 1992, the award is supported by the Wasmer Chair in American Values dedicated to the College’s research and academic activities, particularly those focused on the American free enterprise system and business ethics. The chair was endowed by Mr. and Mrs. John C. Wasmer, Sr., whose interest in the chair is carried on by their sons, Jack ’45 and George ’58, and their families.

“This was not an easy decision, as there were four outstanding candidates including, Dr. Albert Nagy, Dr. Sebastian Brockhaus and Dr. Jisok Kang,” said Dr. Frank Navratil, a member of the award’s selection committee.

“Ultimately, Dr. Petzel’s Spring 2020 student teaching evaluations helped distinguish him for his thoughtful adaptation to teaching via Zoom, Canvas and other forms of virtual communication.”

Among John Carroll students, Dr. Petzel is known for his engaging and clear lectures, and genuine commitment to help his students succeed in classroom and beyond. Many of his students attest to the high level of effort he puts into teaching and his ability to make lectures fun and enjoyable.

Dr. Petzel began his career in accounting in the Financial Services Office of Ernst & Young LLP and engaged in various corporate and partnership tax projects. Before pursuing a Ph.D., Dr. Petzel taught as a full-time Visiting Lecturer at Wake Forest University teaching various tax and financial accounting courses.

All four award nominees, three of whom are accounting professors — Dr. Petzel included — far exceeded the Boler College averages on their student evaluations, perhaps highlighting one reason why the Kramer School of Accountancy and Information Sciences students consistently do well on the CPA exam, earning the top pass rate in Ohio.

Congratulations Dr. Petzel and thank you for contributing to the high level of teaching that Boler students benefit from every day.
