Background

Dr. Paul R. Murphy has taught at John M. and Mary Jo Boler School of Business since 1987. Paul served a three-year term as the Standard Products—Dr. James S. Reid Chair in Management from 1998 through 2001, and is presently a Wasmer Research Professor. Paul’s “real world” experience includes a middle management position at a less-than-truckload motor carrier, as well as consulting assignments for government agencies, for-profit companies, and non-profit organizations. He has been an instructor in corporate employee development programs for organizations such as Ben Venue Laboratories, Lincoln Electric, and the National Catholic Cemetery Conference.

Courses

Paul’s primary teaching involves marketing and supply chain courses such as marketing principles and supply chain management. In late 2004, he taught Marketing Research in the BiMBA (Beijing international MBA) program—considered one of China’s premier MBA programs—at Peking University.

Research

A prolific researcher, Paul has published over 100 articles in major academic journals, to include the Transportation JournalJournal of Business LogisticsInternational Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management; and Industrial Marketing Management, among others. He is a co-author of the books International Logistics and Contemporary Logistics.

Paul’s research has also appeared, or been cited, in leading practitioner journals such as Transportation and DistributionDistribution, and Traffic Management. In addition, he has been quoted in newspapers and periodicals such as the Akron Beacon JournalThe Canton RepositoryThe Cleveland Plain DealerCrain’s Cleveland BusinessInside BusinessTraffic World, and The Wall Street Journal.

Additional Information

Active in professional service, Paul served as Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for the American Society of Transportation and Logistics certification program from 1998-2005. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Transportation and Logistics from 2002-2005. Paul is also on the editorial review boards of the Transportation Journal, the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, and the Journal of Business Logistics.

Recognition of Paul’s professional excellence includes John Carroll’s Distinguished Faculty Award (2002) as well as the Allan N. Nash Memorial Award for Distinguished Doctoral Graduate from the University of Maryland’s Robert Smith School of Business (1998). Paul has also been listed in the 8th (2003-2004) and 9th (2005) editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
